Plovers in Africa

There are several species of Plovers and related birds in Africa.

spotted stone curlew

This is a spotted stone curlew. It looks quite humorous. It was a little out of focus.

Kittkitz's plover

This is Kittkitz's plover. It is a small bird. The horizontal line at the eye and the white breast are probably its distinguishing marks.

long-toed lapwing

This is a long-toed lapwing. This one is quite large. The base of the beak is reddish, and the black and white pattern is distinct, making it easy to identify.

Mongolian sand plover

I think this is a Mongolian sand plover, but there are no pictures in the illustrated book and I am basing my judgment on the description alone, so I could be wrong. I would like to check it out if there is a larger illustrated book in the near future.

blacksmith plover

This is a blacksmith plover. It is so named because of its habit of shaking its head, which resembles the movement of a blacksmith's hammer.

black-winged stilt

It is a black-winged stilt. It is a graceful bird with long red legs. This bird belongs not to the plover family but to the sandpiper family.

spur-winged plover

It is a spur-winged plover. It is humorous that they are all looking in the same direction. Location is the shore of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya.

crowned plover

This is a corwned plover. It is so named because it has a ring on its head like a crown.

This is a wattled plover. It's characterized by the drooping folds at the beak. This photo was taken in Nairobi National Park.
